Challenging Experience by Alleysen - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

A challenging academic experience that I have faced is going online during COVID-19. I was in seventh grade which was hard because at that age I couldn’t tell myself to do things and get it done. I would just stay up late and talk to my friends and then sleep in late and not do my work. It was hard at that age to make myself do my work when my parents were still working. Since I was in seventh grade it wasn’t as impactful as it would have been if I were in high school. Although it was hard for me to get my things done, I did end up doing it. This was hard because it was hard for me to concentrate and get my things done. There was a time when I was behind in my English class and my teacher called my parents. After that, my dad started to tell me more to do it and it helped me get things done. I started to just do it all at once per week rather than just trying to do a little bit each week.
I overcame this by sticking to a better schedule, even though I would still stay up late I would just try to get all my work for the week done at the beginning of the week so I didn’t have to worry about it. I started to get my work that I didn’t do done and then I would work on my work that I had coming up so I would be ahead. Since this was new for everybody it was nice that it wasn’t a ton of work at once. We were not sure when we would be able to come back so the work we got was just the kind of thing that we could do more on our own. This did help me overcome being behind because it was stuff I could do on my own without a teacher and with my parents at work. Going online during COVID-19 was definitely something that was shocking and made me become more independent, but I believe it helped me in the long run. Now I get all my work done on time or early and since everything is now on the computer it helped me become more familiar with working on technology.
