Junior year? WHAT WAS THAT by Arlee - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My junior year of high school was one of the most challenging periods of my academic journey. It was a year full of new opportunities and increased responsibilities, yet it was also a time when I faced significant academic challenges that tested my perseverance and determination.
One of the most daunting experiences I encountered was in my Advanced Placement (AP) English class. I have always loved writing and storytelling, which is why I am drawn to journalism as a major. However, AP English was a whole new level of difficulty for me. The class demanded a deep analysis of complex texts and required me to express my thoughts clearly and concisely in essays. I found myself struggling with the pace and the workload, which was much more intense than anything I had experienced before.
At first, I felt overwhelmed. My initial essays came back with lower scores than I was used to, and I began to doubt my abilities. I remember one particular assignment where I had to analyze a piece of literature and connect it to broader themes. I spent hours writing and rewriting my essay, only to receive a grade that was far from what I had hoped for. It was disheartening, and I felt like giving up.
However, I knew that giving up was not an option. I had to find a way to overcome this challenge. I started by seeking help from my teacher. I approached her after class and expressed my concerns about my performance. She was incredibly supportive and offered to help me improve my writing skills. We scheduled regular meetings where she would review my essays and provide feedback. Her guidance helped me understand what I needed to work on and how to approach my writing more effectively.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also formed a study group with some of my classmates. We would meet once a week to discuss the readings and share our thoughts. This collaborative environment allowed me to gain different perspectives and improve my analytical skills. It was encouraging to know that I was not alone in my struggles, and together, we were able to support each other through the challenges of the course.
Another strategy I employed was dedicating more time to reading and writing outside of class. I started reading a variety of literature, from classic novels to contemporary essays, to expose myself to different writing styles and techniques. I also practiced writing regularly, focusing on organizing my thoughts and developing my voice. This consistent practice helped me gain confidence in my abilities and gradually improved my performance in class.
Over time, I noticed a significant improvement in my writing. My essays became more coherent and insightful, and my grades began to reflect my hard work. The turning point came when I received an A on a particularly challenging essay. It was a moment of triumph that reaffirmed my belief in my capabilities and showed me that perseverance pays off.
The experience of overcoming the challenges in my AP English class taught me valuable lessons that extend beyond academics. It taught me the importance of seeking help when needed, the power of collaboration, and the value of persistence. These lessons have shaped my approach to learning and will undoubtedly benefit me in my future studies.
As I look forward to attending college, I am excited to pursue journalism and music, two fields that allow me to express my creativity and passion for storytelling. I am eager to continue developing my writing skills and exploring new ways to connect with others through my work. The challenges I faced in high school have prepared me for the rigors of college and have strengthened my resolve to succeed.
