Dream Big. by Ashleigh - May 2014 Scholarship Essay
Dream big. You hear these words all throughout elementary and high school, but do you ever listen to what they really mean? A dream is something that you want to do, or want to be. If you dream big, you set high standards for what you want to do or be. You throw away all your inhibitions and you really open up your eyes and shoot for what you really want, regardless of how crazy it may sound to others.
When I was a child, my mother, now deceased, told me always to dream big. She had many dreams. She dreamed to go to the university that she had wished to go to since her childhood after she graduated high school, and she did. When she found herself unhappy with her life, she wasn't afraid to dream of turning it around, and she did. She dreamed of re-attending college and walking down a new path towards making herself happy with her life and her career. Yet again, she succeeded, and I'm happy knowing that when she passed, she held a job that she enjoyed living with her only child who she loved. I'm inspired every day by my mother's courage to dream big, and I hope I can do the same.
In fact, in my past few years of high school, I have begun to dream big. As a freshman, I did not have high expectations of myself, as many high school students also do not. However, my freshman year of high school, I won an English award from my English teacher, and I realized how much I enjoyed English. Since then, I have been pursuing writer, and I hope someday to be an English teacher who can also touch the lives of students as my English teacher touched mine. I highly enjoy writing, and perhaps I can get published some day in my days of teaching. Many of my peers think I sound crazy when I relay my dream to them, but it is my dream, not theirs. And I know from past experience that if one dreams big, anything is possible.
