Architecture: The Perfect Combination by Ashley - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

I am excited to apply to study architecture. After a lot of consideration, I decided to apply for this major because it combines two of my favorite things: art and history.
I'm a very creative person, and I've loved art ever since I first picked up a crayon as a toddler. In high school, I've been lucky to be able to take three years of ceramics, where I've really rekindled my love for art. In ceramics, I can create literally anything I can think of. Ceramics is an amazing medium in that you physically put something out in the world; similar to architecture, you create something physical, something tangible, based on a single idea. I'm excited to be able to continue to design and create such works as an architect.
History has had such a huge role in architecture, and vice versa, and I'm excited to learn about this complex relationship between the two. It is amazing to me that Louis XIV of France was able to use the splendor of the Palace of Versailles to keep his enemies close and preserve his absolutism. Modern architecture, and its focus on energy efficiency, has largely been shaped by the growing emphasis on environmentalism, and I'd love to be able to study how historic shifts like increasing concern for the Earth have influenced architecture. I truly believe architecture is the perfect major for me, and I can't wait to do what I love.
