The Passion to Thrive by Aubree - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Aubree Russell, and I am a high school senior with big dreams of making a difference in the world. Like many students, I have faced my share of challenges, especially when it comes to academics. I have struggled with mental health as well, but I am proud of how far I have come by pushing myself to keep moving forward.

One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was during my junior year. My grades dropped significantly at the start of the year, and I felt overwhelmed and hopeless. I decided to take a break from school to focus on my mental health, but it was hard to find the courage to go back. I had support from my parents and some faculty members, but it felt like the school system itself was not equipped to help students like me. When I finally tried to return, I was told I could not continue at my school. I knew it was due to my mental health at the time. It felt like I was given up on completely. It was heartbreaking to leave the teachers and friends I trusted, and I felt lost about what to do next.

Despite feeling discouraged, I knew deep down that I wanted to finish high school and pursue my dreams. I took time to work on my mental health and figure out a plan to get back on track. In March of this year, I found an alternative school in my district that seemed like the perfect fit for me. I had a phone meeting with a counselor, and to my delight, I was accepted into the school that same week. This school focuses on helping students like me succeed, and I felt hopeful for the first time in a long while.

Being accepted into this new school was a turning point for me. The faculty truly care about the students, and their support has made all the difference. I receive weekly check-ins, mental health support, and extra help on assignments I find challenging. This environment has allowed me to change my mindset and tackle difficulties with a more positive outlook. I am currently passing my classes, even after getting sick earlier this school year. The school focuses on the essential classes I need to graduate, which reduces stress and helps me concentrate on what really matters.

This experience has taught me resilience and the importance of seeking environments where I can thrive. I am now more determined than ever to pursue my goals of becoming a psychiatrist or a neurologist. I want to help others who face similar challenges and make a positive impact in the field of mental health. Starting fresh at this new school has given me a sense of hope and relief, and I am excited about what the future holds.

I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story, and I am hopeful that my experiences will inspire others to keep pushing forward, no matter how tough the journey may seem.
