My love for theatre by Brayden - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As a high school senior with a deep love for theatre and performing arts, I have faced many hurdles, but one academic experience truly tested me. It was during my junior year when I took on the daunting role of director for our school's spring play. Balancing this responsibility with my academic workload was incredibly challenging, but it taught me crucial lessons about perseverance, teamwork, and personal growth.
Directing a play is no small task, especially when you are also trying to keep up with schoolwork. My GPA was around 3.3, and I knew I had to maintain it if I wanted to pursue my dream of studying theatre at a university like Louisiana State University, Missouri State University, or even Carnegie Mellon. The pressure was intense, and I felt it every day. The rehearsals were demanding, and the cast and crew looked to me for guidance. Meanwhile, assignments, projects, and exams were piling up.
The first few weeks were overwhelming. I struggled to find a balance between my academic responsibilities and my commitment to the play. I found myself staying up late to study after long rehearsals, and my grades started to slip. I knew I was in trouble. I realized that if I wanted to succeed in both areas, I needed to develop better time management skills and seek help.
I started by creating a detailed schedule that outlined my daily tasks, setting aside specific times for studying, rehearsals, and personal downtime. This helped me stay organized and ensured that I was making progress in all areas. I also reached out to my teachers, explaining my situation and asking for their support. They were understanding and offered me guidance on how to manage my workload more effectively.
Another key to overcoming this challenge was learning to delegate and trust my team. As a director, I initially felt the need to oversee every aspect of the production, but I soon realized that I could not do it all on my own. I began to rely more on my assistant director and stage manager, empowering them to take on more responsibilities.
