Pushing through AP environmental science by Cole - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
During my freshman year of high school, I faced one of the most challenging academic experiences that truly tested my perseverance and taught me invaluable lessons. It was in my AP Environmental Science class, a subject I was eager to learn about but quickly found myself struggling with. The challenge was compounded by the fact that my teacher was not as supportive or clear as I had hoped.
From the start, it was evident that the class would be tough. The material was dense, and the workload was heavy. However, what made it particularly difficult was the lack of guidance from my teacher. Her lectures were often disorganized, and she did not provide the clarity or support that many of us needed to grasp the complex concepts. When I approached her for help, her explanations were often rushed and left me more confused.
Despite the challenges, I was determined not to let this experience defeat me. I realized that I had to take matters into my own hands if I wanted to succeed. The first step was to find alternative resources to help me understand the material. I turned to online videos, forums, and textbooks to supplement what I was learning in class. These resources became my lifeline, providing the explanations and examples that I was missing.
I also reached out to my classmates who were facing similar struggles. We formed a study group, meeting regularly to discuss the topics, share notes, and help each other with difficult concepts. This collaboration was crucial. It not only helped me gain a better understanding of the material but also provided much-needed moral support. We were all in the same boat, trying to navigate the course as best as we could.
Time management became another key aspect of overcoming this challenge. Balancing the demands of AP Environmental Science with my other classes and responsibilities required careful planning. I started using a planner to organize my study sessions and set achievable goals. This approach helped me stay focused and avoid the stress of last-minute cramming.
Despite my efforts, my final grade in the class was not as high as I had hoped. However, I learned that success is not always measured by a letter grade. The experience taught me resilience, independence, and the importance of seeking out resources and support when faced with adversity. I learned to adapt and find solutions even when the odds were stacked against me.
This challenging experience has prepared me for future academic endeavors, particularly as I plan to study advertising at Grand Canyon University. I know that college will present its own set of challenges, but I am confident in my ability to tackle them head-on. I have learned that setbacks are opportunities for growth and that perseverance is key to overcoming obstacles.
In conclusion, while my AP Environmental Science class was one of the toughest academic challenges I have faced, it was also one of the most rewarding. It taught me the power of self-reliance, collaboration, and determination. I am grateful for the lessons learned and am eager to apply them as I continue my educational journey. This experience has shown me that I am capable of overcoming difficulties and has prepared me to embrace the challenges that lie ahead in college and beyond.
