A Classroom that Works for Me! by Connor - October 2014 Scholarship Essay

A classroom is a place where opportunity exists; the opportunity to create and mold minds for the future. The classroom is the environment which will either inhibit or promote a student’s core values and overall knowledge. There is no perfect classroom, but nothing in life is ever perfect.

All classrooms must have teachers who are willing to adapt their curriculum and expectations based on their unique students. Adaptability in the classroom allows for a more seamless and intuitive education to be relayed to the students. Students must be able to understand that adapting to each teacher is essential in order for them to receive the maximum educational benefit that the classroom is able to provide. Respect among the individuals within the classroom is absolutely paramount when creating a successful classroom environment. The better the ability of a classroom to facilitate positivity and unity, the better the chances of having students who are not only learning but enthused to learn more.

A teacher should always be the primary catalyst for enthusiasm directed towards the curriculum and should also have the patience to work with each student individually. A classroom will function most effectively when all of the students can have their voice heard and their ideas recognized as important. The classroom, while limited to a designated space, should have the ability to change the character of each its students.

In my personal experience, I have found that a classroom will be open to personal insights and opinions which should only serve to enhance the learning environment. Possessing the confidence to speak up and freely communicate ideas to those within the classroom is an invaluable skill that will frequently be used in the workplace. A classroom is the first setting in which individuals can begin to hone their communication skills and learn to convey their thoughts with others. For this reason alone, the classroom must be organized in such a way that the student will have the best chance to develop their social skills and ultimately, achieve success in the real world.

Personally, when a successful classroom environment encompasses me, it encourages me to strive to attain the highest amount of knowledge that I am capable of grasping. Success is built upon those willing enough to change for the betterment of those involved. A classroom should be expected to provide its students with nothing less than the best opportunities to succeed both in and beyond the classroom. If a classroom is incapable of providing these opportunities, then the classroom is doing its students a grave disservice. A successful classroom is incredibly critical for the development of successful individuals. I thrive in a classroom which will allow me to be the best I can be.
