First college level class by Connor - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
When I started my first college level class "College Algebra", I immediately started to have difficulty with the class. I have not been in any super difficult classes that I have had to study a great amount for so I was struggling with understanding the lessons in this class. When my grade started to drop directly after starting the class I knew that what I was doing was not working, and that if I did not change my habits I was going to end up with a bad grade in the class. I had to teach myself to truly be able to sit down and study, and at the start it was hard. I would sit for hours at night gaining nothing because I was distracted. I would also take better notes in class until I was practically writing down every word our teacher said. After all of the work I put in with no gain I was frustrated and wanted to give up. Although I told myself that I am trying to teach myself something that I do not understand. The only way I will be able to understand is to get extra help from my teacher. So I would meet with my teacher for about 20 minutes every day. I have always been stubborn before this and never asked questions or asked for extra help. So going up to a teacher and asking for help was surprisingly difficult for me, although I forced myself to do this because I knew my grade was important and I needed the extra help. So over time as I started to get extra help, my grade has been going up. And I am happy that I started to ask questions because I would then be able to understand the material and be able to study it. Now I am not afraid to ask questions and I am able to study much better.
