Bad start. by Deonjanea - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
During my transition into 9th grade, my mother did not enroll me at Harper Woods High School initially. She believed that she could complete my enrollment on the first day of school. As a young student, I followed her lead, only to discover that I would have to wait two weeks before officially starting my high school experience. This waiting period was difficult for me, as I felt isolated at home while my friends were busy making new connections and enjoying their first week of high school.
When I eventually started high school, I found myself to be quite reserved. I did not share many classes with my friends, and my shyness made it challenging to form new friendships. Over time, I did manage to make new friends and began a relationship. However, a conflict arose when my boyfriend at the time unfollowed one of my new friends and mistakenly accused me of doing the same. This led to misunderstandings and arguments on social media, culminating in a confrontation.
As a result of this incident, I received a warning from the dean, who stated, “If you ever fight at Harper Woods High School again, you’ll be kicked out.” Following that, I was suspended for two weeks, which significantly impacted my academic performance. Upon my return, I struggled with my grades; I needed assistance but did not seek help. Enrolling two weeks late and then being suspended contributed to a challenging freshman year, during which I failed four out of six classes. Subsequently, I attended summer school to address the classes I had failed, specifically Health, English Language Arts 9, and Algebra 1.
This academic year, I still need to earn credit for Biology. I will participate in credit recovery for Biology from 10th to 12th grade. This experience has taught me the importance of education and the necessity of staying on track. Freshman year I had full of regrets and wished I could’ve started over. One thing about life is that it’s permanent, whatever's done, is done. Ever since 9th grade, I’ve always taken school seriously and always put my work first.
