Let’s talk math by Destinee - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

In my early years understanding lessons came easily to me. I never had to study and I always made straight As without even lifting a finger. That was until my 9th grade year. After being virtual majority of 7th grade and all of 8th grade I became a very lazy student so 9th grade definitely was a major obstacle to take on. I excelled in all of my classes except one, algebra 1. For some reason I just couldn’t get the information to stick. As my other grades flourished my algebra grade began slipping. Even as I was seeing this I still wasn’t studying because deep down I knew it would stick eventually, right? Then came my first progress report A’s galore until my eyes met algebra . I had an extremely low c and this crushed me. My mother was disappointed and even though it was just a progress check ik I would have to work harder than ever to bring it up by report cards. From that point on I had to take a different approach. I had to make myself study. It felt so tedious I went from coming home and playing games to coming home and getting right to work. While it was hard I could see an immediate improvement in my retention of the lessons. In the end I finished with a B average. The only grade in my entire transcript that wasn’t a 4.0. It hurt my gpa but I took a much needed lesson with me . In 8th grade my lowest grade in a class was 89 and in 11th grade straight A’s. As a senior with few classes I still try to stay on top of my lessons because it is so easy to fall victim to senioritis and who knows how it would’ve been if I never had that algebra class.
