Simple Regrets by Diana - August 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I am nearing the year where I finally become a legal adult and take on more responsibilities, my biggest fear is to regret the decisions I make as a teenager in my adult years. I have barely started my senior year of high school, and already, my teachers are asking me to begin deciding on a future career, which I have always found difficult. Although I have always loved learning about all the different subjects in school, I have never truly been passionate about any career, most of my decisions as a kid becoming short-lived. Growing up, I always heard the phrase "What do you want to be when you grow up?" and frustratingly enough I would never be able to answer truthfully, always listing the first thing that came to mind. I have done much personal reflection over the past couple of years, and somehow still find it difficult to determine what it is that I truly want for myself. I often catch myself comparing my achievements to that of my peers, who seem to have their whole educational future planned out for themselves and a deep passion for a particular subject or major.
So, while others may have the goal of graduating from med school, or getting their PhD in a particular field of study, my next big educational goal is to choose a major and career path that will be the best decision for my future, and that will allow my future self to be proud of the decision I made as a teenager.
