The Chemistry Scuffle by Dylan - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

In my junior year of high school, I was required to take a chemistry class. This was not something I wanted to hear from my guidance counselor. Not only was science my least favorite subject, but I also wasn’t very good at chemistry related lessons in the past. A couple of my older friends had also previously expressed their difficulties with this class and the teacher. This was very intimidating for me and created a sense of fear during this class.
Chemistry was a full year course and I had a class with a couple friends and a lot of underclassmen. This meant that I could get distracted often and struggle to pay attention. This was something that was unacceptable because of my teacher's way of telling us information.
I had to overcome lots of diversity and challenges throughout this course. Bias and bad grading was a problem that I had to deal and work with. When talking to an adult who has authority over me, I had to remember my role and the importance of this class. I also had to intake information very quickly because of the speed of the class. We had weekly quizzes that were very challenging and difficult. Although I ended this course with an A, it was very challenging academically.
