Math Tutoring (Jonathan Abraham) by Ellis - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
Math has been a consistently challenging subject ever since I started school. I was usually the last one in the class to understand the topic, which would either be weeks later or long after the test. COVID-19 did not help with my understanding of math; it made learning the material assigned significantly worse. During this era, I was taught online without a teacher; the only "teachers" there were class monitors, and they did not have a solid understanding of the material we were working. During middle school, I was using Carnegie Learning. Later, after transferring schools, I was using Pearson in high school. In 9th grade, I started a new topic within math: geometry, and I struggled more than before on the subject. My parents then enrolled me in Mathnasium, where I met Jonathan.
Jonathan is a great tutor. He walked me through the material and made the concepts a lot clearer than what was assigned to us after the explanation. After a few weeks, the teacher and my parents noticed an improvement in my math skills. As a result, my parents kept me there, and I further improved. After a few years, we grew close, and I now see Jonathan as a good friend while also a tutor. As of now, I am taking calculus classes. Without him, I would have failed my previous semester.
