A New Perspective by Elly - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
English has never been my favorite subject; in fact I don’t think I ever really enjoyed an English class until my senior year of high school. I took British Literature my senior year of high school for my English credit that year and it was one of my absolute favorite classes of all of high school. My English teacher for that class taught me a whole new perspective on English and she did it so well I truly enjoyed the class. She was not only a great teacher, but she was also a great friend. She is the one who truly convinced me to go to my dream school and pursue nursing.
She not only taught me a new perspective on English which I greatly appreciated, but more importantly on life and why I should continue my educational journey at my dream school. She too had a hard time deciding what she wanted to do for college and if it was going to be worth the money spent, and the debt gathered. She told me she made the right choice of going away and going to her dream school and would never imagine doing it any other way. I personally had a lot of family pressure to take over my parent’s business of a wedding venue someday and was not sure if I wanted to leave home yet and would just attend community college for a cheaper option. Although this option was there, my English teacher told me that if nursing was something I wanted to pursue and if there was a really good program, I was accepted into then I would look back and regret it. She told me that yes college was about your education and that was a top priority, but if you are going to pay for higher education you should be doing something you are going to love every day and not only that but also to better yourself.
College is also about bettering yourself and becoming the person, you know you want to be, and she is the one who encouraged me to take that jump and pursue my dream. Because of this and on top of her showing me how to love English in a new way I was able to be accepted into my dream nursing school and I truly could not have done it without her. She made me a more rounded person in my schooling and really taught me how to perfect my writing and to dive deeper not only into my own writing, but the writing of others. I would not be at my dream school pursuing nursing without her. And with her I am able to do well in all my classes including English and Writing which has turned into something that I love. I am so thankful that I was able to have her my senior year, and I will never look back at the decisions I made because of her.
