My truth by Elna - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Elna Dort, and I am currently a sophomore at Palm Beach State College, pursuing a major in Childcare. As a Black woman, I have always felt a deep responsibility to contribute positively to my community, especially by nurturing the growth and development of children. However, my journey in college has not been without its challenges. One of the most significant academic challenges I faced was during my first year, which tested my resilience and determination.

When I first started college, I was excited but also nervous about the new environment and the academic demands. The transition from high school to college was tougher than I expected. I found myself struggling to keep up with the workload and the fast-paced nature of college courses. My GPA in my first year reflected this struggle, and I ended up with a 2.5. It was a wake-up call for me, as I realized that I needed to change my approach to succeed in college.

One of the most challenging courses for me was an introductory psychology class. I found the subject fascinating, especially since understanding child psychology is crucial for my major in Childcare. However, the amount of reading and the complexity of the theories we studied were overwhelming. I often felt lost during lectures and found it difficult to keep up with the assignments and exams.

To overcome this challenge, I knew I had to make some changes. First, I reached out to my professor during office hours. This was a big step for me because I was initially hesitant to ask for help, fearing it might make me appear less capable. However, my professor was supportive and provided me with additional resources and study tips that helped me better understand the material.

In addition to seeking help from my professor, I joined a study group with some classmates. This was incredibly beneficial because it allowed me to discuss the material with others and gain different perspectives. We would meet regularly to go over lecture notes, discuss difficult concepts, and quiz each other before exams. This collaborative learning environment made a significant difference in my understanding of the course content.

I also realized the importance of time management and organization. I started using a planner to keep track of assignments, deadlines, and study sessions. Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable parts made it easier for me to stay on top of my work and reduced my stress levels. I set specific goals for each study session, which helped me focus and be more productive.

Another key factor in overcoming this challenge was finding a balance between my academic responsibilities and self-care. I made sure to allocate time for relaxation and activities that I enjoy, such as reading and spending time with friends. This helped me recharge and maintain a positive mindset, which was crucial for my academic performance.

Through these efforts, I was able to improve my understanding of psychology and perform better in the class. Although my GPA is still a work in progress, I am proud of the progress I have made and the skills I have developed in overcoming this academic challenge.

This experience taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, seeking help when needed, and the importance of a supportive community. It also reinforced my passion for Childcare and my commitment to becoming a positive influence in the lives of children. I am determined to continue improving my academic performance and to apply the lessons I have learned to future challenges.

I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story through this scholarship contest. Winning this scholarship would not only provide financial support for my education but also serve as a validation of my efforts to overcome obstacles and pursue my dreams. I am committed to making the most of my college experience and to giving back to my community in meaningful ways.

Thank you for considering my application. I hope to inspire others who may face similar challenges and to demonstrate that with determination and support, it is possible to overcome academic difficulties and achieve one's goals.
