College by Erin - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As a first-time college student at Jefferson State Community College, I have faced a few academic challenges, but one experience stands out as particularly difficult. Transitioning from high school to college was a significant change, and it came with a set of challenges I had not anticipated. The biggest challenge was adjusting to the rigorous demands of my pre-nursing program while learning to manage my time effectively.
In high school, I was accustomed to a structured schedule and constant guidance from teachers. College, however, required a level of independence and self-discipline that I had not fully developed. The workload was heavier, and the expectations were higher. I quickly realized that my high school study habits were not going to cut it in college, especially in a demanding field like nursing. I was overwhelmed by the amount of reading, the complexity of the material, and the pace at which we were expected to learn.
The first semester was particularly tough. I struggled to keep up with my classes, and my grades were not where I wanted them to be. I felt stressed and anxious, worried that I might not be able to succeed in my chosen field. However, I knew that nursing was my passion and that I needed to find a way to overcome these obstacles.
The turning point came when I reached out for help. I realized that I could not do it all on my own, and there was no shame in seeking support. I began by talking to my professors, who were incredibly understanding and offered valuable advice on how to manage my coursework. They encouraged me to ask questions and participate more actively in class, which helped me gain a better understanding of the material.
I also took advantage of the resources available at Jefferson State. I started attending tutoring sessions for subjects I found particularly challenging, like anatomy and physiology. These sessions not only helped me grasp difficult concepts but also allowed me to connect with other students who were going through similar struggles. We formed study groups, which provided a sense of camaraderie and mutual support.
Time management was another area where I needed to improve. I began organizing my schedule more effectively, setting aside specific times for studying, attending classes, and taking breaks. I learned the importance of prioritizing tasks and breaking down larger assignments into manageable parts. This approach reduced my stress levels and made my workload feel less overwhelming.
Additionally, I found that taking care of my physical and mental health was crucial for academic success. I started incorporating regular exercise into my routine and made sure to get enough sleep each night. These changes improved my concentration and energy levels, allowing me to focus better on my studies.
Over time, these strategies paid off. My grades improved, and I felt more confident in my ability to handle the demands of my pre-nursing program. The experience taught me the importance of perseverance and the value of seeking help when needed. It also reinforced my commitment to becoming a nurse, as I learned firsthand the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.
Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges I faced during my first semester of college. They pushed me to grow as a student and as a person. I learned to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and to approach problems with a positive mindset. This experience has prepared me not only for the rest of my academic journey but also for the challenges I will face in my future nursing career.
In conclusion, the transition to college was a challenging academic experience, but it was also a transformative one. By seeking help, improving my study habits, and taking care of my well-being, I was able to overcome the obstacles in my path. I am now more determined than ever to succeed in my studies and to pursue a career in nursing. This experience has strengthened my resolve and equipped me with the skills I need to face future challenges with confidence and resilience.
