Challenge Overcome by Erinda - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
During my junior year of high school, I faced a significant challenge in my AP Government class. I had always been interested in understanding how our government works, but the course was much more demanding than I anticipated. The class required not only memorizing facts but also critically analyzing complex political concepts and applying them to real-world scenarios. This experience tested my limits and taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and adaptability.
At the beginning of the semester, I was excited to delve into the workings of our political system. However, as we progressed, I found myself struggling to keep up with the heavy reading load and the intricate nature of the material. The course demanded a deep understanding of how different branches of government interact, the nuances of political theories, and the implications of landmark Supreme Court cases. My initial enthusiasm was quickly overshadowed by the pressure of keeping up with the fast-paced curriculum.
Despite my struggles, I was determined not to let this challenge defeat me. I knew that understanding government was crucial for my future studies in accounting and finance, as these fields are deeply intertwined with public policy and regulations. I decided to take a proactive approach to improve my understanding of the material.
The first step I took was to seek help from my teacher. I approached her after class and explained my difficulties. She was incredibly supportive and offered me additional resources and study tips. She encouraged me to focus on understanding the underlying principles rather than just memorizing facts, which helped me see the bigger picture.
I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were facing similar challenges. We met regularly to discuss the material, share insights, and quiz each other on key concepts. This collaborative approach was instrumental in helping me grasp complex topics. It provided a supportive environment where I could ask questions and learn from my peers.
In addition to the study group, I utilized online resources to supplement my learning. Websites and videos on platforms like YouTube helped break down complicated topics into more digestible parts. I spent extra time after school watching these videos and taking notes, which allowed me to reinforce what we learned in class.
Time management became another critical factor in overcoming this challenge. Balancing AP Government with my other classes and extracurricular activities required careful planning. I started using a planner to organize my tasks and set specific goals for each study session. This helped me stay on track and ensured that I dedicated enough time to each subject.
Gradually, my efforts began to pay off. I started to feel more confident in my understanding of the material, and my grades improved. The turning point came during a particularly challenging exam. I had spent weeks preparing, using all the strategies I had developed, and when I received my grade, I was thrilled to see that my hard work had paid off. It was a moment of validation that reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance and adaptability.
This experience taught me invaluable lessons that I carry with me as I prepare for college. I learned that challenges are opportunities for growth and that with determination and the right strategies, I can overcome obstacles that initially seem insurmountable. It also reinforced my passion for pursuing a career in accounting and finance, as I realized the importance of understanding the broader political and economic context in which these fields operate.
As I look forward to attending Marquette University, I am excited about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. I am confident that the skills and resilience I developed during my high school years will serve me well in my future studies. I am eager to continue learning and growing, both academically and personally, and I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today.
In conclusion, facing the challenges of AP Government was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It taught me the importance of perseverance, collaboration, and effective time management. These lessons have prepared me for the next chapter of my life, and I am ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that college will bring.
