Why Leadership Skills Are Important For College Success by Evan - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
People know most of the essentials for being a successful student in college. Often times when people are asked what it takes, they will respond with minimal tasks such as note-taking, finishing and turning in homework on time, being well prepared for tests and showing up to class when it starts; the basic ingredients. But one very important quality that's often overlooked is leadership. It is quite difficult to imagine a college student that is currently at his or her learning stage in life, to take on a label of that importance. But little do most students know that if they learn to hone leadership abilities in college, it will drastically, for the best, change their life forever.
One of the reasons why leadership skills are important for college success is improving your peers and other students around you. Most young adults who attend college these days aren't quite sure what they want to be in life or what direction they want to go. Many of them aren't very motivated in finding that out either. But having leadership skills put you at the advantage. One of the admirable qualities in leadership is the ability to galvanize people. Those in a position of leadership, such as a CEO of a company, must have the capability of exciting people for projects that most people wouldn't normally do on their own will. With group projects that go on, there must always be a leader that can organize their faction of peers that will enable them to achieve the class task. Mastering motivation with your peers will make it much more effortless to inspire and delegate those who may work under you in the future.
Secondly, another one of the leadership skills that help you excel in college is your confidence; knowing your self-worth and what you bring to the table. By no means does it mean to be boastful, but to have certainty in what you say and what you do. There are countless papers that need to be written and, more importantly, many speeches that need to be given and most people don't have the confidence that is necessary to deliver it. Walking up to the front of the class room with shaky hands and a stuttering voice isn't going to grab the audiences attention. Having confidence in yourself by knowing and believing you can accomplish what life throws at you, all people can do is stop and stare. Confidence is a unique trait that not only radiates a positive vibe, but also moves people in such a way that they want to be around you.
In addition, the concluding leadership skill that is imperative for college success is managing your own life. In college, most students aren't with their parents anymore, whom often fed them, reminded them of appointments and helped paid for necessities and luxuries. When they are living by themselves, or with a roommate, organizing your life is a key element to success. Leadership isn't just for the other people around you, it's also having the ability to take control of your own life by keeping track of your finances, keeping your dwelling neat and organized and showing up to appointments and scheduled dates on time. Having all that was recently stated intact, allows you to take control of school much easier. Taking leadership in yourself grants you the aptitude in leading others.
Leaderships skills are fundamental for any success that you strive for. Especially college. There are a vast amount of distraction that can get in the way of your success. It could be as minor as someone inviting you to a party when you know you have homework that needs to be finished that night. Many people have a hard time saying no to that. But a person of leadership can clearly articulate to them what needs to be done and will not care what others think of him. Being a leader and having leadership skills is crucial for college success, whether it's for your students, your teachers, or yourself. Mastering leadership skills will not only help you transcend exceed in school, but also at your work, with your friends, and most importantly, your home.
