Mr. Loth: The Kindest Man by Fernando - September 2013 Scholarship Essay

My academic role model is my third-grade teacher Mr.Loth. He not only made learning fun in elementary school but he also showed me kindness with his actions. Years later as I enter my sophomore of college many of his lessons still humble me, motivate me and drive me to be the best scholar and person that I can be.

The first lesson that Mr.Loth taught me was the value of hard work in our assignments. He always found a way to make learning fun. He engaged us with audio, video, hands on learning to help reach all learning styles. He had a great enthusiasm about his class that it was purely infectious. I attribute my love of school and learning to how Mr.Loth showed us what learned can be. Before him I simply saw school as a chore rather than a great opportunity. Now in college his enthusiasm in my third grade class has followed me throughout my academic career. Whether it is learning about programming computer languages or learning about logic, his lessons are still with me in any subject that I study.

The second lesson Mr. Loth taught me was kindness. I learned the most in classes where teacher or professors exemplified kindness to their students. Mr. Loth went of his way to be kind to his students. Always making sure to be respectful and patient with the class no matter the subject. He found a way to break down complex ideas and simplify them in easily understood concepts. He was such a memorable teacher that I have modeled several of my own character values after him as he showed me through example. Character values, which include, kindness, persistence, patience, generosity and humility.

The third lesson Mr. Loth taught me was making learning fun. We could make it fun in our unique ways. He celebrated academic achievement with events in our class that made us feel recognized for our work. This engagement made me respect Mr. Loth and work and study harder for a teacher who made the class cookies to celebrate what we our academic work.  His passion for teaching was evident in the way he approach each subject and teach us in his own unique style.  Always striving to help us understand that learning can be interactive and rewarding.

These lessons through which Mr. Loth freely gave me through his kindness, his willingness to make learning fun and the teaching us the value of hard work. For that I will continue to use his lessons as a scholar and as a person.
