AP Human Geography by Griffin - March 2014 Scholarship Essay
One of my greatest academic achievements in high school has been with my AP Human Geography class. I took this in 9th grade when I was only 13 years old. All of my friends signed up and then dropped out since it was so hard. I wanted to stay in and give it a shot. It was a very hard class especially since I have a visual processing disorder which makes understanding things I read really hard. I made it through the class and got an A. But I did not pass the AP exam at the end of the class. I consider this one of my greatest academic achievements because it was a college level class and I was only 13 (14 at the end). And even though I didn't pass the test, I was able to pass the class with and A. It was a lot of work and a lot of tutoring after school but it was worth it. It was quite an accomplishment my first year in high school.
This allowed me to go on to my second year of high school and take AP World History. My teacher was great. I feel like since I toughed it out in the AP Human Geography class I took in 9th grade that maybe I could do well in this class in 10th grade. Again, it was a really hard class. But I feel like everything shouldn't just be easy. You have to challenge yourself in order to see what you are capable of. It is very competitive though to get into college now a days. You have to take these classes and come out of high school with some college credits or you sometimes feel like a failure. Well I feel like because I had taken that class the year before that maybe I would be able to pass this current class. I was so happy to find out I did pass the AP test. OMG, it was an awesome feeling and quite an accomplishment. That's why I feel like staying in the AP Human Geography class in 9th grade was my greatest academic achievement. That set the tone for my future in high school.
