My Struggles by Heidy - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

During my middle and high school years, I struggled to find motivation and value in my education. I didn’t recognize the power it held for shaping my future. This mindset led me to make poor decisions, such as ditching class, disrespecting teachers, and associating with negative influences, which hurt my grades and ability to learn. At the same time, I faced personal adversities, including a broken home and frequent school changes.
While these challenges were difficult, I now regret not taking more responsibility for my role in my education. Despite school being my only responsibility, I struggled to find a reason to excel academically. However, once my home life stabilized and I found a supportive environment, I began to form positive relationships with my teachers and peers. Seeking help through therapy and building healthy adult mentorship showed me the transformative power of education.
I now understand how education can guide me toward my dream career of working with space aircraft. To reclaim what I missed and prepare for this future, I’ve enrolled in college-level courses to strengthen my knowledge. With a renewed mindset, I collaborate with my classmates and teachers to succeed academically. Today, I approach my education with determination and an open mind, knowing it will lead me to new opportunities and a brighter future.
