A School for Creative Learning by Holly - October 2014 Scholarship Essay
During a classroom discussion nearing the end of the day, my mathematics teacher dawdled off topic and proceeded to share his thoughts on the ideal school for high school students. The school was unlike any other learning environment I have heard of before. He stated that not one class would be mandatory and one could undergo a sundry of classes that would appeal to them. Furthermore, they could create a class if they wanted to imbibe about a subject that wasn't offered. If one desired to create their own class, they were the teacher, and they must educate themselves and others that might sign up for the class. Additionally, he hypothesized that the students enrolled in this school would receive impeccable grades due to the fact they were learning about something they truly enjoyed. Moreover, I postulate this procedure should prevail in all classrooms, schools, and methods of learning.
Although this high school would be lenient, the elementary school beforehand would must be rigorous to meet the needs of these students. Under those circumstances, students could pick their own classes. When a student takes a class they are intrigued with, they will acquire more from that subject than a student who has no interest in the topic. Additionally, If students were given the option to choose the classes they wanted to register with no limitations, they would become more passionate and enthusiastic with the subject rather than their behavior towards a mandatory class. On the other hand, they could not take the same class more than once a day, therefore, they will have a well-rounded education. Moreover, there would be more students engaged in their work and classes if schools and classrooms were to adopt this idea.
In addition to this idea, I believe that self exploration when unearthing a new concept is vital to the learning process. With the resources that are provided, it is not necessary for teachers to stand in front of a chalkboard and drivel words from a textbook. Furthermore, the students can take advantage of these resources and explore the topic themselves and, the teacher can aid them when necessary. Learning unfamiliar subjects can be more enjoyable when one can assimilate them on their own and are more likely to understand what they're learning. For example, If one desired to create their own class, they must research the topic of learning, meaning the student would grasp an exceptional understanding of the subject than they would by having it taught to them in a normal classroom environment.
Nonetheless, When my teacher shared his ideas of this phenomenal school, I couldn't avail but to wonder how beneficial this method would work for me. I could participate in all the classes I love and be further ahead than peers in a normal school system by creating classes that advance me into my career path. Along with that, self exploration is the best way for me to learn foreign concepts. Furthermore, I believe that this type of schooling will not only work for me, but for many other students. I deem that this concept should be incorporated in all classrooms. In conclusion, with this idea lingering inside every classroom, imagine what the future holds for the future generations.
