Idealism or Fantasy? by Jacqueline - October 2014 Scholarship Essay

There are several aspects of what would make a classroom setting ideal. Imagine a classroom where all students were equally committed to the learning experience. Even at the college level there are still the individuals who are more worried about what the girl next to them is wearing or if the boy across the room notices them. Who cares if her clothes aren't designer or her handbag isn't a certain name? Everyone is there to better themselves and succeed in this world.

I want to go to class and focus on what is being taught. I wish that all the students would be equally concerned about doing the best they can do and actually help others succeed as well because we are all part of the this society and one person's success does effect everyone else on some level. Collectively, in order to be a strong nation, we have to attempt to assure that we minimize the failures in our culture and ensure everyone gets a chance to meet their own potential. We may not all have the same talents, but everyone has value. All people should have the opportunity to express what they have and what they can contribute.

To me, an ideal classroom would be an extension of what our culture should be teaching and promoting. We as a society need to learn not to hate or judge. Our teachers need to encourage us to strive for better and challenge ourselves and our peers so that we can collectively succeed. Individuals do not need to like everything about another but should practice tolerance and not try to suppress another's creativity or imagination.

I think an ideal classroom would practice more group work. It is my opinion that teaching students to work together would encourage tolerance, acceptance and understanding. Working together as a team would promote a better exchange or views and beliefs. It would broaden the exchange of knowledge and help pinpoint were the gaps in the lessons being taught. Effective communication and interaction would ideally promote solidarity that we as students would take back into the world and make it a better place for us all.
