My struggles by Jason - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Jason Momon, and I am a high school senior with a deep interest in cinematography and business administration. I am excited about the prospect of attending college to further my education and pursue my passions. However, getting to this point has not been without its challenges. One particular academic experience stands out as both a significant hurdle and a turning point in my educational journey.

During my junior year, I faced a challenging time in my math class. Math had always been a subject that did not come easily to me, but I was determined to improve and do well. The class was advanced algebra, and it required a level of analytical thinking and problem-solving skills that I had not fully developed yet. As the semester progressed, I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the lessons. My grades began to slip, and I started to feel overwhelmed and discouraged.

The most challenging part was the feeling that no matter how hard I tried, I just could not grasp the concepts as quickly as my classmates. This affected my confidence not only in math but in other subjects as well. I worried that my GPA would suffer and that my chances of getting into a good college would be jeopardized. It was a tough time, and I knew I had to find a way to overcome this obstacle.

Recognizing that I needed help, I decided to reach out to my teacher and ask for additional support. This was a difficult step for me because I was not used to asking for help, but I knew it was necessary. My teacher was understanding and offered to meet with me after school to go over the material. These one-on-one sessions were incredibly helpful. I was able to ask questions without feeling embarrassed, and my teacher explained the concepts in a way that made more sense to me.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were doing well in the class. We met a couple of times a week to review homework and prepare for tests. Studying with peers helped me see different approaches to solving problems and allowed me to learn in a collaborative environment. It was reassuring to know that I was not alone in my struggles and that others were willing to support me.

Another key step in overcoming this challenge was changing my study habits. I realized that I needed to dedicate more time to practice and review. I set up a schedule that allowed me to focus on math for a little bit each day, rather than cramming before tests. This consistent practice helped reinforce what I was learning and made it easier to retain information.

Throughout this experience, I learned the importance of perseverance and seeking support when needed. It taught me that it is okay to struggle and that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. My grades improved, and I gained a better understanding of the material. More importantly, I regained my confidence and learned valuable skills that I can apply to other areas of my life.

This academic challenge was a pivotal moment for me. It showed me that with determination and the right support, I could overcome obstacles that seemed insurmountable. It also reinforced my desire to pursue higher education, where I can continue to learn and grow. I am now looking forward to studying cinematography and business administration in college, where I can combine my creative interests with practical skills.

The experience also made me more empathetic towards others who might be facing similar challenges. I have become more willing to offer help to classmates and friends who are struggling, sharing what I have learned about perseverance and the power of asking for help.

In conclusion, facing this academic challenge taught me valuable lessons about resilience, teamwork, and the importance of seeking help. It has prepared me for the future challenges I will face in college and beyond. I am grateful for the experience because it has made me a stronger and more determined student. As I prepare to enter college, I carry with me the knowledge that I can overcome difficulties and achieve my goals with hard work and the support of others.
