After my first year in college I have learned a lot about leadership. One would think while being on your own submitting to authority is not necessary but that is not the case. By being more independent one has to learn that leadership is an essential trait to portray. Going to classes without the constant pressure of doing so is not an easy task. One must rise up and be in control of their own destiny and do what’s necessary to have a successful college experience. I look at leadership in college as a self-motivational angle. Not only must you guide yourself into doing the right thing, but also help be a light to everyone around you.

East Carolina University is my new home. After my first semester this essay means a lot to me because I learned firsthand about leadership in college. As mentioned before I look at this topic in a self-motivational way, in which I struggled with my first semester. College was not what I expected and with lack of leadership I crumbled, knowing I could achieve so much more. This semester I took control, I showed leadership in not just my studies but inspired my peers who also made poor decisions. This is the reason I look at leadership as a personal decision first before anything else. Once I establish a solid ground of leadership I plan on reaching out to the community and investing my time in leadership opportunities at my college.

Leadership has to start from somewhere and I believe it should start with the individual. Without this important trait one might struggle excessively in college. Without leadership there is no guidance and to continue to be on the right track one must have a set path. High school and college are extremely different and the transitions is not easy. By having a sense of leadership or being led by someone with the good intentions, the student will be on the path to victory.
