The Purpose of Education by Joseph - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
The purpose of an education is multifaceted. All over the world education plays a powerful role in society and it can mean different things to different people. In my opinion, however, education is a lifelong process that teaches us to be better citizens and helps us to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in a society that is constantly changing. Every person in society has a role to play and education is one of the most important, if not crucial, factor that will determine this role and how we will we develop as a person. Throughout school, I have noticed a change in level of difficulty and the degree of emphasis on learning to meet educational requirements. For example, a high school education, especially a challenging one of AP and honors courses, is mostly structured to prepare students to cope with the pace and demands of college work and help them succeed in a new learning environment or other endeavor. For many, including myself, the hard work and efforts in school will all culminate with the start of the first college semester. Here is where the great exploration of learning begins. For me, college is a place where I will need to show lots of initiative. If I can take full advantage of all the opportunities and benefits of a higher education, it will hopefully lead to future career success.
My educational goal is to earn a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree with a specialization in filmmaking; a program available through several in-state universities. Through the exploration of film, combined with a critical understanding and knowledge of other disciplines, I hope to gain a well-rounded education in order to pursue a career in the film industry where I can have a positive impact on the community I intend to serve. It is this desire to interact with students from different backgrounds, as well as to engage actively in the learning process, that I feel the purpose of a higher education is too stimulate the mind and ultimately prepare someone for success in life. I am determined to put in the hard work to achieve the dream of a college education and further my chances of a promising and meaningful career in my chosen field. As for later in life, I believe education and my enthusiasm and passion for learning will continue to have a positive impact on any future pursuit.
