My experience by Julianna - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

One of the most challenging academic experiences I have faced during my high school years was transitioning from in-person classes to online learning during the pandemic. This sudden shift was not easy for me, as I am someone who thrives in a classroom environment where I can interact directly with teachers and classmates. The lack of face-to-face communication made it difficult to stay engaged and motivated. Additionally, the online format required a level of self-discipline and time management that I was not fully prepared for at the time.

At first, I found myself struggling to keep up with assignments and maintain my usual grades. The distractions at home were endless, and I missed the structure that a regular school day provided. As a student with a GPA of 3.38, I have always taken pride in my academic achievements, and I was determined not to let this new challenge derail my efforts.

The first step I took to overcome this obstacle was to establish a routine that mimicked a typical school day. I set up a dedicated study space in my home, free from distractions, and made a schedule that included specific times for attending virtual classes, studying, and completing assignments. This routine helped me create a sense of normalcy and allowed me to focus better on my studies.

Another important step was reaching out for help when I needed it. I realized that just because I was not in a physical classroom did not mean I was alone. I started attending virtual office hours and study sessions offered by my teachers. They were incredibly supportive and provided me with the guidance I needed to understand the material better. I also formed study groups with my classmates, which allowed us to support each other and share resources. These interactions were crucial in helping me feel connected and engaged.

I also had to improve my time management skills significantly. With the flexibility of online learning, it was easy to procrastinate, but I knew this was not sustainable. I began using a planner to keep track of deadlines and set small, achievable goals for each day. Breaking down larger tasks into smaller, more manageable ones made them feel less overwhelming and helped me stay on track.

Moreover, I learned the importance of taking breaks and caring for my mental health. The isolation and uncertainty of the pandemic were stressful, and it was important to find ways to relax and recharge. I started incorporating short breaks into my study sessions, where I would go for a walk or do something I enjoyed. This practice helped me return to my studies feeling refreshed and more focused.

Throughout this experience, I discovered a lot about myself and my ability to adapt to new situations. I learned that I am capable of overcoming challenges by being proactive and seeking support when needed. This experience also reinforced my passion for education and my desire to become a teacher. I realized the significant role teachers play in supporting their students, especially during difficult times, and it inspired me to pursue a career where I can make a positive impact on others' lives.

As a Hispanic woman, I understand the importance of representation in education. I want to be a role model for students who come from similar backgrounds and show them that they can achieve their goals, no matter the obstacles they face. My experience with online learning has prepared me to handle unexpected challenges and has strengthened my resolve to become an educator who can adapt to the needs of my students.

In conclusion, the transition to online learning was a challenging academic experience that tested my ability to adapt and persevere. By establishing a routine, seeking help, improving my time management skills, and taking care of my mental health, I was able to overcome this obstacle and maintain my academic performance. This experience has not only prepared me for future challenges but has also solidified my commitment to pursuing a career in teacher education. I am excited about the opportunity to attend college and continue my journey toward becoming a teacher who can inspire and support future generations.
