Leadership Academy by Kearny - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

One of the most valuable academic experiences I’ve had was participating in the Leadership Academy at my school. This program helped me develop essential leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills that have been invaluable in my personal and academic life.

In the Leadership Academy, we focused on activities and exercises that built teamwork, communication, and decision-making. One challenge I faced was learning how to collaborate effectively with peers who had different perspectives and communication styles. We often worked together in groups where each person brought unique strengths and opinions to the table. My role was to make sure everyone felt included, heard, and motivated to contribute, even when disagreements arose.

I discovered that leadership is not about having all the answers or being the loudest voice in the room—it’s about listening actively, showing empathy, and guiding the group toward a common goal. I also learned how to communicate my ideas more clearly and persuasively, while also being open to constructive feedback.

The Leadership Academy taught me the importance of adaptability, cooperation, and respect in achieving a shared vision. These experiences have prepared me for my goal of pursuing a career in business management, where I hope to lead diverse teams with a commitment to respect, collaboration, and shared success.
