Mental Health Dreamer by Kelsey - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As I reflect on my academic journey, one challenging experience stands out that has shaped not only my education but also my perspective on perseverance and resilience. As a student pursuing a degree in Mental Health and Counseling at Florida Atlantic University, I faced a particularly tough semester that tested my limits and taught me invaluable lessons.
During my first year of graduate school, I encountered a course that was notoriously difficult: Advanced Psychopathology. This class was essential for my major, as it delved deeply into the complexities of mental health disorders, their diagnoses, and treatment plans. I was eager to learn, but soon realized that the volume of material and the depth of understanding required were overwhelming. The course demanded not only memorization but also the ability to analyze and apply theories to real-world scenarios, which was a significant step up from my undergraduate studies.
The challenge was compounded by the fact that I was also working part-time to support myself financially. Balancing work and a demanding course load left me feeling stretched thin. I found myself struggling to keep up with the readings, assignments, and the intense preparation needed for exams. The stress began to take a toll on my mental health, which was ironic given my field of study. I felt like I was drowning and started to doubt my capabilities and whether I was truly cut out for this path.
However, I knew I could not give up. I had a deep passion for mental health and a strong desire to help others through counseling. I realized that to overcome this challenge, I needed a new strategy. First, I sought help from my professor. I attended office hours regularly, asking questions and seeking clarification on topics I found difficult. My professor was understanding and provided additional resources and guidance, which helped me grasp the more complex concepts.
I also formed a study group with a few classmates. We met weekly to discuss the material, quiz each other, and share insights. This collaborative approach not only helped me understand the coursework better but also provided a support system. Knowing that others were facing similar challenges made me feel less isolated and more motivated.
Time management became crucial, so I started to meticulously plan my days. I set specific times for studying, work, and self-care, ensuring I maintained a balanced routine. This structure helped me stay organized and reduced my stress levels. I also made sure to incorporate breaks and activities that I enjoyed, such as reading for pleasure and exercising, to keep my mind fresh and focused.
Furthermore, I utilized resources offered by the university, such as tutoring services and mental health workshops. These resources provided additional support and techniques for managing stress and improving study habits. I learned the importance of asking for help and using the tools available to me, which was a humbling experience.
Through these efforts, I gradually saw improvement. My grades started to reflect the hard work I was putting in, and I felt more confident in my understanding of the material. By the end of the semester, I had not only passed the course but excelled in it. This experience taught me that challenges are opportunities for growth. It reinforced my commitment to my field and strengthened my resolve to persevere through difficult times.
This challenging academic experience was a turning point in my education. It taught me resilience, the value of seeking help, and the importance of community and self-care. These lessons are not only applicable to my studies but also to my future career as a mental health counselor. I am now more equipped to empathize with clients who face their own challenges and to offer them support and strategies for overcoming obstacles.
In conclusion, facing and overcoming the difficulties of that semester has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic career. It has prepared me for future challenges and reaffirmed my passion for mental health and counseling. I am grateful for the lessons learned and look forward to applying them as I continue my studies and eventually, in my professional life, helping others navigate their own paths to wellness.
