Precalc and I by Krystal - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

During my junior year at Valley Stream South High School, I faced a significant academic challenge in my AP Precalculus class. Math had always been a subject I enjoyed, but AP Precalculus was a different beast altogether. The complexity of the concepts and the pace of the class were intimidating, and I soon found myself struggling to keep up.

The first few weeks were manageable, but as the semester progressed, the material became increasingly difficult. Topics like trigonometric identities and polar coordinates seemed insurmountable at times. I remember sitting in class, feeling lost and overwhelmed as my teacher introduced new concepts that seemed to build on each other at lightning speed. My confidence took a hit, and I started to doubt my abilities.

The turning point came after a particularly challenging midterm exam. Despite my best efforts, my grade was lower than I had anticipated. I felt discouraged and worried about how I would fare in the rest of the course. I knew I had to find a way to overcome this obstacle, not just for my grade, but for my own sense of accomplishment and growth.

Determined to improve, I decided to take a proactive approach. I began by reaching out to my teacher for help. I attended extra help sessions after school, where I could ask questions and get clarification on the topics that confused me. My teacher's guidance was invaluable, as they provided me with additional resources and explained concepts in a way that was easier for me to grasp.

I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were facing similar challenges. We met regularly to review class notes, work through practice problems, and support each other. This collaborative effort not only made studying more engaging but also allowed us to learn from each other's strengths and perspectives. It was reassuring to know that I was not alone in my struggles, and together, we were able to tackle the material more effectively.

In addition to group study sessions, I utilized online resources, such as educational videos and math forums, to supplement my learning. These resources provided alternative explanations and examples that helped reinforce my understanding of difficult concepts. I also practiced problems daily, which helped me to become more comfortable and confident with the material.

Over time, my hard work began to pay off. I saw improvements in my test scores, and I started to regain my confidence in my mathematical abilities. More importantly, I learned valuable lessons about perseverance and the importance of seeking help when needed. This experience taught me that challenges are not insurmountable obstacles, but opportunities for growth and learning.

Through this journey, I realized the power of determination and the value of a strong support system. These lessons have prepared me for future challenges in college and beyond, especially as I pursue a career in nursing, where problem-solving and teamwork are crucial.

In conclusion, my struggle with AP Precalculus was a defining moment in my academic journey. It taught me the importance of resilience, collaboration, and self-belief. I am grateful for the support of my teacher and peers, who helped me navigate this difficult time. As I prepare to embark on my college journey, I carry these experiences with me, ready to embrace new challenges with the same determination and optimism. I am confident that with hard work and perseverance, I will achieve my goals and make a meaningful impact in the field of nursing.
