My Academic Challenge by Kylee - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

In 2019, the COVID pandemic began and greatly impacted my academics. It started towards the end of my seventh-grade year and caused most schools in the county to go into lockdown. This meant we had to have school online with Zoom classes, and teachers would post most of our assignments on Schoology. Many teachers and students struggled to find assignments to post and found it hard to communicate with each other. COVID made schooling really difficult for me, and I started to slack off in my classes due to having no motivation.

While being online for the end of my seventh-grade year and the first quarter of my eighth-grade year, I struggled with keeping up my grades. It was hard having to teach myself all of my lessons without being in a classroom or having any teacher to help me when needed. My grades were slipping because I couldn’t get the hang of online school, which made it very hard for me once I got back to school so I could finish out the school year. I would get so behind in my classes due to not having any motivation to do anything. It was specifically hard for me not to have a teacher in my ear telling me that assignments were due or that I needed to stay on task. I had to learn how to adapt and teach myself during that time. This also made it hard for me to come back to school because I felt that I was so far behind everyone else in my classes. Once I came back, school was just as hard as I thought it would be and it took me a while to get back into the flow of things.
