Laila Gadson by Laila - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a freshman at Fort Valley State University, I have already encountered some tough academic experiences, but one in particular tested me in ways I did not expect. My major, Animal Sciences, is something I am deeply passionate about because I have always wanted to learn more about caring for animals. However, stepping into college-level courses in this field was a big leap from what I was used to in high school. The course that really challenged me was Introduction to Animal Science, and it was during my first semester.

Starting college, I was both excited and nervous about what lay ahead. In high school, I was a good student, but college demanded a whole new level of learning and independence. Introduction to Animal Science was a comprehensive course that covered everything from animal biology and genetics to nutrition and husbandry. The sheer amount of information was overwhelming, and I quickly realized my high school study habits were not enough.

At first, I struggled to keep up with the fast-paced lectures and heavy reading load. The scientific terms were complex, and I often found myself lost during class discussions. When I received my first quiz grade, it was not what I had hoped for, and it was clear that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed.

Determined to overcome this challenge, I decided to take action. I reached out to my professor and started attending office hours regularly. This was a big step for me because I have always been a bit shy about asking for help. However, my professor was incredibly supportive and patient, explaining concepts in different ways until I understood them. These sessions not only cleared up my confusion but also gave me more confidence.

I also joined a study group with a few classmates. We met twice a week to go over lecture notes, tackle difficult topics, and quiz each other. Studying together was really helpful because we could learn from each other’s strengths and perspectives. It also made studying more enjoyable and less lonely, which kept me motivated.

Realizing I needed better time management, I started using a planner to organize my study sessions, assignments, and exams. Breaking down the material into smaller, manageable parts made it less intimidating. I set specific goals for each study session, which helped me stay focused and see my progress.

I also sought out additional resources outside of class. I found online tutorials and videos that explained complex concepts in a more visual and simplified way. These resources were invaluable in reinforcing what I learned in class and giving me different perspectives on the material.

Through these efforts, I slowly started to see improvements in my understanding and performance in the course. My quiz and assignment grades began to rise, and I felt more comfortable participating in class discussions. By the end of the semester, I had not only improved my grade significantly but also developed a deeper appreciation for the subject.

Looking back, I learned that facing academic challenges head-on and asking for help when needed are crucial steps in overcoming obstacles. This experience taught me the value of perseverance, collaboration, and effective study habits. It also strengthened my commitment to my major and my dream of working in animal sciences.

This challenging academic experience was a turning point for me. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me develop skills that will be essential throughout my academic and professional life. I am so grateful for the support I received from my professor and peers, which played a significant role in my success. Moving forward, I feel more prepared to tackle future challenges with confidence and resilience.
