Mrs. Gladys Sweeney by Laketha - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
A person from my community who has inspired me and helped me to build the confidence I needed to achieve my educational goals, as well as made a major contribution to molding me into the woman I am today, is none other than the illustrious, enthusiastic and conscious, Mrs. Gladys Sweeney, my high school math teacher. Not only was Mrs. Sweeney, an amazing algebra and trigonometry instructor, but she also mastered the equation to life. She has inspired me in ways no other instructor could. She made it her goal to build rapport with her students, always creating a safe space for learning and transparency. She was stern yet easygoing and somehow knew when I got off track, leading me back to where I needed to be.
To give you an example of Mrs. Sweeney’s character, I was picked on in school, mocked, and called names by those I considered friends, for making above-average grades and valuing my education. My grades started to plummet. Mrs. Sweeney not only took notice, but she also acted. She pulled me to the side and spoke with me privately, letting me know of her concerns. I was spiraling down the wrong path. She advised me to always be true to myself, put my best foot forward and NEVER belittle myself because of the opinions of others. She constantly reminded me that I had a bright future ahead and that I needed to have friends who were rooting for me along with me on my journey and to leave those behind who were not supportive.
Mrs. Sweeney gave me the gifts of knowledge and perseverance, as well as encouragement. She inspired me to never give up, no matter how difficult the situation, and to always “learn my lesson” the first time. She instilled in me a willingness to help others, to always have a smile on my face, and no matter what the situation or where you are in life always apply yourself to do your best because you may not get a second chance. Mrs. Sweeney not only became someone I looked up to, but she became someone who I believed in because she believed in me.
Mrs. Sweeney lost her battle with cancer in 2020. You would have never known she was sick because she showed up and displayed her strength instead of weakness and chose to smile instead of showing signs of illness. She fought a good fight and her legacy will continue to not only encourage me but encourage the lives of everyone she met. If she were alive today, I would say,” Thank you, Mrs. Sweeney, for your strength, discipline, and kindness.
