Be Yourself by Leah - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

If I had one phrase I could tell someone entering high school is would be to "Be Yourself". What does "Be Yourself" truly mean to a person entering high school? I believe that to be yourself you must whole-heartedly believe in yourself and your ability to make your own decisions. Trust your instinct and do not do anything you feel uncomfortable doing. Make you decisions based on what you feel is right and not on what other people believe is "right". To be yourself is to acknowledge you have the power and the courage to direct your own life. To be yourself is to be who you are and reflect what values you have been taught from your parents.

Nine years ago I was a high school freshman. I was scared, nervous, and unsure of to expect. I made mistakes as everyone will, but I regret every time I tried to “fit in”. Every time I attempted to “fit in” I ended up doing things that weren't true to me. I fully believe that being you in every situation can never end badly. Make your decisions wisely and consider the consequences. I really hope this essay will help an incoming freshman and make a difference in someone’s life. I wish that I had another persons’ perspective to read when I was an incoming freshman.
