Overcoming challenges in the class by Lizeth - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was during my debate class. Initially, I found it extremely difficult to participate because the idea of debating in front of people, especially strangers, felt overwhelming. I was naturally reserved and had little experience speaking in front of an audience, let alone confidently arguing a point under pressure. My anxiety would spike every time it was my turn to present, and I struggled to articulate my thoughts clearly.
However, I knew that overcoming this fear was essential not only for my grade but also for my personal growth. I started by practicing my arguments in front of a mirror and then gradually with friends or family members who gave me constructive feedback. I also observed my classmates, taking note of their strategies and confidence, which motivated me to keep improving. Over time, as I repeatedly stepped up to the podium, I became more comfortable with the process. What once felt terrifying turned into an exciting opportunity to share my perspective and engage in critical thinking.
By the end of the semester, I had gained enough confidence to debate fluently, even on topics I had little time to prepare for. My progress was reflected in my grades, as I received high marks in the class. More importantly, I conquered my fear of speaking to strangers, which has been a skill I continue to rely on in many aspects of my life. This experience taught me the value of persistence and stepping outside my comfort zone to grow.
