A little about me by Lola - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Lola Barkema, and I am a senior at Ben Lomond High. I am eager to pursue a degree in
fields like Kinesiology or Sports Management, where I can blend my passion for health and sports
with a desire to help others.
During my childhood, I faced a rare type of eye cancer. It was a challenging time for my family, and
my dad worked three jobs to cover my treatment costs. His dedication has been a constant source
of inspiration for me. He has always been my biggest supporter, and I am determined to make him
proud by succeeding in college and beyond.
Maintaining a 3.67 GPA while participating in sports has taught me resilience and the value of hard
work. My experiences have shaped me into a determined individual who is ready to tackle the
challenges of college life.
Receiving the Courage To Grow Scholarship would significantly ease the financial burden on my
dad, who has supported me throughout my life. It would allow me to focus on my education at
Montana State University, Southern Utah University, or Newberry College, and give back to my
community in the future. Thank you for considering my application.
