Studying: Climbing the Mountain of Academic Knowledge by Mackenzie - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As a freshman in college, I have faced many new academic challenges and have spent countless hours this semester to overcome them. Perhaps one of my most difficult challenges was my Introduction to Biology course. While it may sound easy, as it is an introductory class, I was placed with a notoriously difficult professor. At the beginning of the year, I was not worried. I was a straight-A student in high school and hardly ever studied for tests. However, after my first exam in his class, I knew I had a mountain of academic knowledge to climb. Upon receiving my grade, which was not good, I immediately went out in search of better study habits. I learned that I should study a little bit every day, find a quiet place to focus, and occasionally review with others. However, the most beneficial habit I learned was to attend tutoring. I had always believed there was a stigma around tutoring and that attending a session would mean I was failing. That could not have been further from the truth! By the time the next exam rolled around, I had attended at least one tutoring session a week and already felt way more confident and prepared. I went in, took the test, and sure enough my hard work had payed off. I still have a ways to go in finding the perfect study habits, but attending tutoring was by far one of my greatest achievements in my journey to climb the mountain that is studying.
