Overcoming a Challenging Academic Experience by Makell - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
During my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to enroll in a dual-enrollment college English class. I was excited about the challenge, knowing it would prepare me for the rigor of university academics. However, as the semester progressed, I realized that the course was more demanding than I had anticipated. The assignments required deep analysis, extensive research, and a level of writing proficiency that exceeded what I had been accustomed to in high school.
The first essay assignment was a wake-up call. I had spent hours writing what I thought was a solid paper, only to receive a grade that reflected numerous areas for improvement. The professor’s feedback was detailed but daunting, pointing out weaknesses in my thesis statement, organization, and use of evidence. For the first time, I felt overwhelmed by the gap between my current skills and the expectations of college-level work.
Instead of letting the setback discourage me, I decided to approach the challenge head-on. I began by carefully reviewing the professor’s feedback and seeking clarification during office hours. Although I felt nervous at first, those one-on-one meetings proved invaluable. The professor’s explanations helped me understand how to craft a stronger argument and support it with credible sources. I also sought guidance from my high school English teacher, who offered additional strategies for improving my writing.
In addition to seeking help, I devoted more time to the writing process. I broke each assignment into smaller steps, dedicating time to brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising. I also formed a study group with other high school students in the class, where we exchanged feedback on each other’s work. These peer discussions gave me new perspectives and ideas to strengthen my essays.
One of the most challenging assignments was a research paper that required synthesizing multiple sources to support an original argument. I spent countless hours in the library and online, learning how to evaluate sources and integrate them into my writing effectively. Despite the workload, I found myself growing more confident with each draft.
By the end of the semester, my hard work had paid off. I earned an A on the final essay, a grade that felt like more than just a number—it represented the growth I had achieved through perseverance and dedication. More importantly, the experience taught me the value of seeking support, embracing feedback, and pushing through challenges.
This college English class not only improved my writing skills but also prepared me for the demands of higher education. It reminded me that success often comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone and rising to meet new challenges. I carry these lessons with me as I continue my academic journey, confident in my ability to tackle whatever comes my way.
