My challenge in school by Marwan - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Marwan Abdelrahman, and I am a freshman at Northern Kentucky University, majoring in Cybersecurity. As I reflect on my journey so far, one challenging academic experience stands out. It was during my first semester in college, where I faced unexpected difficulties that tested my resolve and adaptability.

Starting college was both exciting and overwhelming. I was eager to dive into my Cybersecurity major, but I quickly learned that college-level coursework was far more demanding than I had anticipated. The transition from high school to college was a significant leap, and I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace and volume of assignments.

One particular course, Introduction to Cybersecurity, was especially challenging. It was not just the complexity of the material that made it difficult, but also the new style of learning. The lectures were fast-paced, and I was expected to grasp complex concepts quickly and apply them in practical scenarios. My initial exam scores were lower than I had hoped, and I began to doubt my ability to succeed in my chosen field.

Faced with this challenge, I knew I had to find a way to overcome it. The first step I took was to reach out for help. I realized that I could not do it alone, and seeking guidance was not a sign of weakness but a step towards improvement. I approached my professor during office hours, which was intimidating at first. However, my professor was understanding and provided me with additional resources, including online tutorials and recommended readings, which helped clarify the concepts I struggled with.

In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also formed a study group with some classmates. This was a game-changer for me. Collaborating with peers allowed us to share different perspectives and learning techniques. We met regularly to review lecture materials, discuss difficult topics, and quiz each other. This not only improved my understanding of the subject but also helped me develop a support network that made the whole experience less daunting.

Time management was another crucial aspect that I had to improve. In high school, I could get by with minimal planning, but college required a more disciplined approach. I started using a planner to organize my schedule, setting aside specific times for studying, attending classes, and completing assignments. Breaking down tasks into manageable chunks made them less overwhelming and more achievable.

Moreover, I realized the importance of balancing my academic responsibilities with self-care. Initially, I was so focused on catching up that I neglected my well-being, which only added to my stress. I began incorporating regular exercise into my routine, which helped clear my mind and boost my energy levels. Taking breaks and ensuring I got enough rest also made a significant difference in my ability to concentrate and retain information.

As the semester progressed, I noticed a gradual improvement in my performance. My exam scores improved, and I felt more confident in my understanding of the material. It was not an overnight transformation, but a steady process of learning and adapting. This experience taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of seeking help when needed.

Reflecting on this challenge, I am grateful for the lessons it taught me. It reinforced my passion for Cybersecurity and strengthened my resolve to succeed in this field. I learned that challenges are opportunities for growth, and overcoming them requires determination, resourcefulness, and a willingness to adapt.

This experience also highlighted the importance of community and support. Whether it was my professor’s guidance, the camaraderie of my study group, or the encouragement from friends and family, I realized that I am not alone in this journey. Building connections and reaching out for help are vital components of academic success.

In conclusion, facing a challenging academic experience during my first semester at Northern Kentucky University was a pivotal moment in my college journey. It taught me invaluable skills such as effective time management, the importance of collaboration, and the need for balance between academics and personal well-being. These lessons will undoubtedly serve me well as I continue my studies in Cybersecurity and beyond. I am determined to keep pushing forward, embracing challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.
