J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings - My Inspiration by Meaghan - February 2014 Scholarship Essay
"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." The very first experience I had reading these words and every one I have had since, imparted to me the importance of focusing on the present. Gandalf's words to Frodo at the very moment he needs to hear them are a reminder to us all that life doesn't have to be as overwhelming or complex as we sometimes make it. Sure there are times for everyone that life will seem complicated no matter what. But what we decide to do in those times is what matters and not necessarily what happens afterwards since we cannot know what that will be.
I'm sure many people wonder the same question I do. "Why do I exist in this particular time of history and for what purpose?" It can be an exciting thought to ponder when considering all of the possible adventures one can have. However on the flip side it can be rather daunting, especially if you're in a similar situation to Frodo and envisioning only darkness for your future. In every period of history, there are wonderful things happening in certain parts of the world, and in others there are some pretty nasty and horrific things happening. This has always been the case and may always be. It is not something we have control over though, so it is not something that we should worry over too much.
There have been many of these differing types of moments in my life, and I believe it is something that every person experiences on a daily basis. Enjoying the moments when you feel excited to be on this strange adventure in life, while dreading many other moments not knowing what the future may hold. Both of these moments are when you can remember the quotation above as you remind yourself that the only time that matters in your decision making is the time you have been given. If you think about it, technically the only time you have been given is the present moment. The past is gone and the future has not yet happened. To me this speaks of the simplest way to simplify life. Decide what to do with, and how to live the present moment, while only planning for the future when needed.
