Education Is The Key by Meraiah - October 2024 Scholarship Essay

Education is the key to reaching my career goal. Many believe that you don’t need to acquire a degree in order to become successful. It may be true for some; but not true for others. There are many careers that do not call for an educational degree.

I aspire to become either a Dermatologist. I noticed in the State of Michigan that there are not a lot of Dermatologists that cater to darker tones. Why is that? I asked my mother to set up an appointment for me to have small keloids removed from the back of my ear. They advised it would be a four month wait for an appointment and the office would need to call me back in two weeks to offer an appointment. Why am I still waiting for an appointment? I did not receive that call back. There aren't enough dermatologist that specialize in the care of brown/melanin skin. Why is that?

Education is the key to fulfilling my goals. Without it, it would not be possible; my goals cannot be reached.

There is a need in my community. Biological sciences have always been intriguing. I have already begun studying the sciences. My goal is to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biological Science (pre-med) then furthering my education in Medical School. My goal is to become that Medical Doctor.

I will continue to make my family and community proud. To add to the few dermatologists in the community, it will be a big bonus. Also, to help step people through their issues would also be a bonus. Brown girls will see that they can too, strive for their dreams and not settle. They can too step out of their comfort zones and reach higher for bigger and better opportunities. I will then set up a mentorship program, continuing from what I am currently doing. Giving back and uplifting the community is what I will continue to strive to do while paying homage to all those who have supported me and allowed me to stand on their shoulders in order to succeed. I also would like to set up annual scholarships for multiple students with like backgrounds.

I will always give thanks to God and my family and that strong U.S. Marine in my life, my dad. He was pursuing his Bachelor's degree, but could not finish due to his passing in 2021. Interesting 10/8 is the day my father passed.
