Why College Needs Leaders by Michael - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Choosing to go to college can be one of the toughest decisions a person can ever make in their life. It seems like it is either “be thrown into the real world with minimal education”, or “submit to hundreds of thousands of dollars of student debt so that you may be more prepared for that thing called life.” Both ways sound like having to walk along a narrow cliff that takes just one step out of line, and all of a sudden you are at the bottom, broken and bruised. The students that make it through college successfully do not do so by accident, it is a voluntary decision to do whatever it takes in order to accomplish the goal they have set for themselves. It is a conscious effort to follow your heart, and no matter how bad things get, no matter how hopeless things look to just keep moving forward. That is a quality that is found in both a successful college student and a great leader. The term “successful college student” is synonymous with great leader because both are among the most disciplined individuals in society today. They have heart, they have courage, they have will power, but most importantly they have the strength to inspire others, and lead them through the good times and the bad. A lot of people go through college thinking it is a single player campaign rather than a multi-player battle. Teamwork is essential in college, and at the head of every great team there is a great leader. This does not mean that a student should sit back and let another person lead the way, rather that they should strive to act upon the leader within them. Once they have done that it is then that they may be truly successful because it is then that they can give back, it is then that they can show others how to be a leader.

A successful college student and a successful leader both have one this one thing in common. They are remembered even after they are gone, and their legacy withstands the test of time. They touch those around them and enrich the lives of the people they come in contact with, which is what people expect a great leader to do.
