Speaking of Science by Michelle - August 2013 Scholarship Essay
In my senior year of high school, I had a teacher by the name of Mr. Chan. The environmental science class was an elective; I did not need the class to graduate. I thought the class would be strictly lecture and lab, as all of my other science classes had been. To my surprise, Mr. Chan decided to focus on a more useful tactic: public speaking in the science field. I had to learn how to incorporate science into a presentable form that was interesting, practical, accurate, and would hold the attention of an audience who may not be from a science background. This lesson was especially interesting and helpful to me because in my freshman year of college it became extremely practical. Presenting a factual science lecture in a modern way is something I am relieved I know how to do, and I am grateful for Mr. Chan taking the time and energy to go above and beyond his required lecture-formatted class. Although the lesson was not exceptionally easy to learn, the effort put in was definitely worth the outcome. My classmates and I can now speak with accuracy in the science area, but also with value to our audience. I love that the hard, factual science field I am in is now lively and fun; not only am I still learning lessons such as Mr. Chan's as I learn and grow, but I am also remembering ones of the past which have helped me so much.
