Leadership skills are extremely significant when it comes to college success. Before I dive into what makes leadership skills so important, I must first touch on what the skills are. Leadership skills include; courage, creativity, commitment, confidence, Decisiveness, Flexibility, and good judgment. It is essential to have the qualities that ensure success in college. For example, college assignments including group work require some of these skills. As a college sophomore I have had to execute creativity, confidence, and flexibility when working with groups. Group work is only successful when each student is vocal with what their thoughts and ideas are for the assignment. Being vocal comes from having confidence; if you’re not confident you might shy away from your group members and prevent them and yourself from fully succeeding. Flexibility is also an essential trait that leads to college success. As adults many students have full time jobs either as parents or employees, meaning they cannot always meet at the library after classes or spend hour’s freely editing papers. Therefore, they must be flexible and organized in order to successfully comply with their personal work needs and their academic needs.

Leadership skills include being courageous. Public speaking is a huge factor in determining a student’s grade in a class room. Many students’ have fears of public speaking which might be detrimental to their grade. Having courage to speak up in class and participate in class discussions exhibit successful qualities of leadership. Public speaking is also good practice for future interviews for possible job opportunities. The essential reason to be in college is to graduate with a degree and search for a job in your field. Therefore, learning how to properly speak in front of others will ensure you not only a good grade in the class but also, an advantage at a job interview. Overall Leadership skills are essential to ones academic career and a lack of these skills will only counteract with one’s own successes.
