Adjust To A New Enviornment by Nathan - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

What is advice? Is it a suggested comment to help someone better themselves in their work ethic? Or is it an explanatory guidance to keep someone on the right path? Multitudes of middle school students are barricaded in the mindset of imuturatiy, not knowing that they’ll walk into a place where different races, personalities, and mindsets are established. High school is the corner stone of education to help students become academically proficient. With Jr. High school students embarking on the path of entering their first year in high school as a freshman, advice is a necessary ingredient. What advice I would give to an incoming freshman is adjust to a new environment.

To begin with, freshman year can be critical and filled with intense pressure. I being a high school senior have had the experience to adjust to a bigger learning environment 4 years ago. I pretty much give advice to incoming high school freshman to not walk in a place with a “middle school” mindset. When we think we know it all and have that chip on our shoulder of not being responsible, we become our own boss. Things such as refusing to listen to your teachers can get you in trouble. If you don’t respect your teachers, of who respect will you earn?

Secondly, preparing yourself for the worst is the biggest obstacle any freshman can withstand. With those words ringing in your ear that says freshman year is important, it brings anxiety and determination on a freshman. Equipping yourself with the shield of responsibility is a major factor in surviving your first year as a high school student. Whoever I advise on handling their school work or homework should benefit them to keep attacking at their education. The only person who stands in front of your education is yourself.

Thirdly, learning the assets of maturity will take time to grow and develop in. Childish conduct and behavior is a part of the freshman high school year a person is currently. For example, if a student was being disruptive in the class, I’ll tell them to leave the class room for 10 minutes. That reason being, setting the example for your classmates is something that’ll be on your reputation until you’re a senior. If a freshman worries about being considered the “teacher’s pet”, he or she is doing something positive to become a productive citizen. There are so many tasks, responsibilities, and formats that a freshman needs to adjust to.

In conclusion, adjusting to a new environment will help a high school freshman walk in maturity. When I was a freshman I was comfortable and thought 9th grade wasn’t that important. There is only so much that you can bring out of middle school into high school, and that’s your learning skills. Things such as attitudes, egos, and negative energy won’t help you succeed your freshman year. When a middle school student mind is made up to adjust, he or she will be ready to face any challenge in high school that comes their way.
