My challenge by Nina - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Every student faces challenges in their academic journey, and I am no exception. My name is Nina Gerceski, and I am currently a senior in high school with a passion for computer science and programming. While I have always been interested in technology, my path to understanding and excelling in this field has not been without its hurdles. One particular challenge that stands out in my academic experience was my struggle with advanced mathematics, which is crucial for my chosen field of study.

Throughout high school, I maintained a GPA of 3.02, which I am proud of, but math was a subject that consistently tested my limits. It was during my junior year that I encountered my most significant academic hurdle: calculus. Up until that point, I had managed to get by with decent grades in math, but calculus was a completely different beast. The concepts were abstract, and the pace of the class was relentless. I found myself overwhelmed, and my grades started to slip.

At first, I was hesitant to seek help. I thought that asking for assistance would mean admitting defeat. However, as my understanding of calculus continued to falter, I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. I decided to take a step back and evaluate what I could do differently. I knew that overcoming this challenge was not just about passing the class but about building a strong foundation for my future studies in computer science.

The first step I took was to reach out to my teacher. I scheduled a meeting to discuss my difficulties and to seek advice on how to improve. My teacher was incredibly supportive and suggested that I attend after-school tutoring sessions. He also recommended online resources and practice problems that could help reinforce the material. This was a turning point for me because it taught me the importance of utilizing available resources and not being afraid to ask for help.

In addition to attending tutoring sessions, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling. We met twice a week to review homework, discuss challenging concepts, and quiz each other. This collaborative environment was beneficial because it allowed us to learn from each other and approach problems from different angles. It also helped me realize that I was not alone in my struggles, and that many students face similar challenges.

I also took it upon myself to explore additional learning methods. I found that watching video tutorials and using interactive math software helped me understand calculus concepts more clearly. These tools allowed me to learn at my own pace and revisit topics as needed. I dedicated extra time each evening to practice problems, ensuring that I was consistently reinforcing what I had learned.

By the end of the semester, I had not only passed the class but had gained a deeper appreciation for the subject. This experience taught me that perseverance, resourcefulness, and collaboration are key to overcoming academic challenges.

Moreover, this challenge in calculus helped me develop skills that are essential for my future studies in computer science. Programming often requires logical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are closely tied to mathematical concepts. By overcoming my struggles with calculus, I have become more confident in my ability to tackle complex problems, whether they are in math or programming.

Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the challenge it presented. It pushed me to grow as a student and as an individual. It taught me the value of seeking help and collaborating with others, as well as the importance of being persistent in the face of difficulty. These lessons will undoubtedly serve me well as I pursue a major in computer science and programming in college.
