Perseverance by Nya - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

During my high school years, I enrolled in a Dual Enrollment program to earn college credits while completing my high school diploma. While this opportunity was invaluable, it presented one of the greatest academic challenges I have ever faced. Balancing rigorous college-level courses with high school classes, a part-time job, and extracurricular activities stretched me to my limits. There were times when I felt as if I had taken on too much, especially on days when I had to juggle a demanding work schedule and lengthy assignments, all while maintaining my commitments as a student and employee.

Adding to the complexity, my schedule was particularly intense. I woke up at 4:30 a.m. daily to catch the school bus, attended classes, worked evening shifts that often ended at 10 p.m. or later, and then stayed up late completing homework. Sleep became a luxury, and I began to feel the weight of exhaustion. It wasn’t just the workload that was challenging—it was the mental strain of trying to meet high expectations in every area of my life.

I quickly realized that my usual study habits and time management strategies weren’t enough to meet the demands of this new workload. I needed to adapt. My first step was to assess how I was spending my time. I started tracking my daily activities to identify inefficiencies. This revealed moments in my day that I could repurpose for productivity. For example, I began studying during lunch breaks or using travel time on the bus to review notes or plan out assignments. These small adjustments allowed me to make better use of my limited time.

Another significant change I made was creating a detailed schedule. I broke down my tasks into specific, manageable goals for each day and allocated dedicated time for each one. This approach prevented me from feeling overwhelmed by large projects and ensured I stayed on track. I also learned to prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance, focusing on deadlines while also setting aside time for long-term assignments.

Support from others also played a crucial role in overcoming this challenge. I made a conscious effort to communicate openly with my teachers and professors about my situation. Their understanding and willingness to provide guidance helped me feel less isolated. Additionally, I reached out to classmates, forming study groups that not only enhanced my learning but also provided a sense of camaraderie and mutual encouragement.

Despite my busy schedule, I recognized the importance of taking care of my mental and physical health. Initially, I neglected this aspect, which only made the situation harder. Over time, I began incorporating small habits to reduce stress, such as setting aside time for short walks, sketching to relax, and ensuring I ate balanced meals during my shifts at work. These practices helped me recharge and maintain focus.

The experience of balancing so many responsibilities wasn’t easy, but it taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance, adaptability, and self-discipline. By the time I completed the Dual Enrollment program, I had not only earned college credits but also developed skills that have shaped the way I approach challenges today. Learning to manage my time effectively, seek support when needed, and maintain resilience in the face of adversity prepared me for the demanding nature of higher education and future professional endeavors.

Looking back, I’m proud of how I navigated this difficult period. What once felt overwhelming became an opportunity for growth. The experience proved to me that challenges, no matter how daunting, can be overcome with determination, resourcefulness, and a willingness to adapt. These lessons continue to motivate me as I pursue my goals in higher education and beyond.
