Calculus: My Journey Through ECE Math Challenges by Paige - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Math has always been a subject that I approached with a mix of wonder and nerves. While I have always enjoyed the logical aspect of it, I have found that it takes me longer than most to grasp many of the concepts. This became especially apparent when I enrolled in Early College Experience (ECE) Calculus. The course was rigorous and fast-paced, and I quickly realized that it would be my biggest academic challenge so far.
Maybe it was in my head, but ECE Calculus was daunting. The concepts were complex, and the workload was intense. I often found myself spending long hours trying to understand the material, only to feel stressed and overwhelmed (especially before a test). My classmates seemed to grasp the concepts quickly, which only added to my anxiety. Why did it take me longer than everyone else? Does that mean I’m not good at it? I knew I had to find a way to overcome these challenges if I wanted to succeed.
The first step I took was to change my mindset. I reminded myself that struggling with a subject does not define my capabilities. It just meant that I needed to find a different approach to learning. I started to focus on understanding the 'why' behind each concept, rather than just memorizing formulas and procedures. This shift in perspective helped me to see the bigger picture and made the material feel more manageable. My teacher, Mrs Gonzalez, was instrumental in this process for me. I realized that by understanding the foundational principles, I could apply them to solve more complex problems, which was a crucial turning point in my learning process.
Realizing that I could not tackle this challenge alone, I sought help from my teacher. I began attending extra help sessions after school and during study hall, where I could ask questions and work through problems at my own pace. My teacher was incredibly supportive and took the time to explain concepts in different ways until I understood them. This one-on-one attention made a significant difference and boosted my confidence. I also learned the importance of not being afraid to ask questions, no matter how simple they seemed. Her willingness to work with me helped me improve my confidence and skills a little at a time.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also joined a study group with a few classmates. We texted and met regularly to review notes, work on practice problems, and prepare for exams. This collaborative environment was incredibly beneficial, as it allowed us to learn from each other and share different problem-solving techniques. Explaining concepts to my peers also reinforced my own understanding and helped me retain the information better. They understood that it took me longer to finish. The study group became a support system where we encouraged each other.
I also realized the importance of developing effective study habits. Instead of cramming the night before a test, I chunked each day and set a time to review my notes and practice problems. This consistent effort allowed me to gradually build my understanding and retain the material more effectively. I also utilized online resources, such as educational videos, to supplement my learning and gain different perspectives on difficult topics. These resources provided additional explanations and examples in clarifying challenging concepts.
Despite the challenges, I began to see improvement over time. I felt more confident in my abilities. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and the value of seeking help when needed. It also reinforced my determination to pursue a major in chemistry or environmental science, where math plays a crucial role. I realized that overcoming challenges in math would prepare me for the analytical thinking required in these fields.
I am grateful for the challenges I faced so far in ECE Calculus. They have pushed me to become a more resilient and resourceful student. I learned that it is okay to struggle and that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. This experience so far has prepared me for the challenges I will face in college and beyond, and I am eager to continue my academic journey with the skills I have gained. I am excited to apply these lessons to my future studies, knowing that I have the tools to tackle any academic obstacle that comes my way.
My experience with ECE Calculus so far has been pivotal in my high school career. It has challenged me academically and personally, but it also taught me invaluable lessons that I will carry with me into the future. I am proud of how far I have come and excited for the opportunities that lie ahead as I pursue my passion for science. The journey through ECE Calculus was not just about overcoming a difficult subject; it was about growing as a learner and as a person, ready to embrace the challenges with confidence.
