A Mentor To Me by Peyton - January 2025 Scholarship Essay

Through my 12 years of school I have played 4 sports and I had many teachers each year. I have got to learn from many mentors in my life who have all impacted me in a positive way. There is one person that I have found the most impactful on my education journey. She teaches second grade, and although I never had her as a teacher myself, I got to spend time with her in her classroom and outside of school as well in the livestock world.
This year for my study hall I spent time in Ashely Dellenbaugh’s classroom in the elementary wing. I never thought that I would love to be around little kids as much as I do. I love when I can help them achieve their goals and get them motivation. Ashley helped me realize that I could be a teacher and help kids for a job. I never thought of teaching because I always hated school, but seeing school from a teacher's perspective is a lot more fun. Ashley gave me a different perspective on what teaching is about. I can tell by watching her in her classroom with the kids that she genuinely cares about the kids and what's to help them the best she can. She keeps things fun and lighthearted while also teaching the kids so many different things.
Ashley is the reason I have figured out what I want to do after high school. She showed me that even if I struggled as a kid and needed extra help, I can still become a teacher and help the kids like others had helped me. Ashley always said that I could give the kids a different perspective to learning, and can impact so many lives. I am so thankful for Ashely and all that she has taught me this year. I am also thankful for all the kids in her class for giving me a chance to help them and letting me be a part of their education journey. I can’t wait to see what my future in teaching holds and show Ashely how much she has impacted my life and my education journey.
